The Model T Legacy
 Historian David Hounshell
called the Ford Model T "the only truly revolutionary
automobile of the twentieth century." That is because
what the Model T did could be done only once. It made automobile
ownership available to millions, and made the desire for automobile
ownership virtually universal.
By fostering unprecedented personal mobility,
the Model T drove the transformation of the landscape, the
economy, and the social life of America.
The auto industry became the driving force in the US economy.
The abundance of affordable cars powered the rapid growth
of suburbia, the building of the interstate highway system,
the spread of shopping malls, the popularity of family vacations,
and changes in habits of courtship. Without the revolution sparked by the Model
T the world as we know it would not be possible.
